I started this project with a simple idea: to write down the first name, word, or descriptive term for God that came to mind for each letter of the alphabet. What began as a small exploration into the character of God turned into a full-blown Bible study—and probably the longest piece of writing I’ve done so far. As I dug deeper, I was amazed by how many Scriptures echoed and confirmed one another across both the Old and New Testaments. Time and time again, when I found a verse in the New Testament describing God or revealing one of His names, I would find a corresponding verse in the Old Testament—and vice versa.
This has been one of my favorite projects and has taught me so much about who God truly is. Of course, this is by no means an exhaustive list of God’s names, attributes, or the Scriptures that reveal them, but simply a collection of what I’ve gathered. If this writing helps anyone, I’m grateful—but I know for sure it has helped me. I hope and pray that as you read, you’ll catch a glimpse of just who God is—and how truly awesome the Mighty God is.
A – Alpha
Revelation 21:6 (KJV) – “And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.”
Merriam‑Webster defines “Alpha” as “the 1st letter of the Greek alphabet” — used also to mean “something that is first : beginning.”
The same God who is Alpha—the Beginning—is the same God in Jesus Christ who promises to give living water to all who are thirsty.
John 7:37-39 (KJV) – (37) In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. (38) He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (39) (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
B – Beginning
Revelation 1:8 (KJV), “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.”
I know that “Alpha” means the same as “Beginning,” but many Scriptures specifically reference God as the Beginning, and I believe that’s an important distinction. God is not just someone who was present in the beginning—He is the Beginning. He is the source of creation (see the next letter), the origin of our salvation, and the start of a new and beautiful life when we find that salvation in Him.
C – Creator
Genesis 1:1 (KJV), “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”
Colossians 1:14-17 (KJV) – (14) In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: (15) Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: (16) For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: (17) And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
God created the heaven and the earth. In Him—Jesus Christ, the image of the invisible God—we have redemption through His blood. By Him all things were created. He is before all things (the Beginning), and by Him all things consist (created).
D – Deliverer
Psalm 18:2 (KJV) “The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.”
The Psalms are full of verses that refer to God as the Deliverer, so it was hard to choose just one. But I found this particular passage to be a beautiful representation of the many ways God can be our personal help—our Rock, Fortress, DELIVERER, Shield, Horn of Salvation, and High Tower.
Romans 11:26 (KJV), “And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:”
Out of Sion (Zion) will come THE DELIVERER!
E – Elohim
– Basic Definition
Elohim is a plural noun in Hebrew, but it is usually used with singular verbs and adjectives when referring to the one true God of Israel. In this context, it emphasizes majesty, power, and greatness.
– Literal Meaning
Root: Comes from the root El (אֵל), meaning “God” or “mighty one.”
Elohim: Literally means “Gods” or “Mighty Ones” — but in biblical usage, when referring to the true God, it’s treated as singular.
The name Elohim is one of the most ancient and foundational Hebrew names for God, used over 2,500 times in the Old Testament. In the KJV, “Elohim” is most often translated simply as “God.” While the English translation doesn’t retain the Hebrew name, you can still identify where “Elohim” was used in the original text.
Deuteronomy 6:4 (KJV) – “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord:”
This is one of the most recognized Scriptures where God is translated from Elohim.
F – Father
Matthew 7:11 (KJV) – “If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?”
Luke 11:13 (KJV) – “If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?”
James 1:17 (KJV) – “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”
He is our Father, our Redeemer, and the giver of every good and perfect gift. If our earthly fathers know how to give good gifts, how much more will our Heavenly Father give even greater ones? I know He has promised us the most beautiful gift of all—to us, our children, and our children’s children—the precious gift of the Holy Ghost, His Spirit living within us.
G – Good Shepherd
Psalm 23:1 (KJV) – “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
John 10:11 (KJV) – “I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.”
He is not only our Shepherd—He is our Good Shepherd. We are the sheep of His pasture, and He loves us so deeply that He would give His life for us. He would leave the ninety-nine just to find the one little lost lamb. And that little lost lamb was you and me.
H – Healer
Isaiah 53:5 (KJV) – “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”
1 Peter 2:24 (KJV) – “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.”
When Jesus endured suffering through torture, crucifixion, and death, He was not only giving Himself for the sins of the world—for our transgressions and iniquities—but He was also making a way for our healing. He holds all power over life, death, and the grave. If He did it then, He can do it today. He is unchanging, and His great love and compassion remain the same today as when He walked the earth, showing mercy and healing the afflicted.
I – Immanuel
Isaiah 7:14 (KJV) – “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”
Matthew 1:23 (KJV) – “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.”
“This is the fulfillment of the Isaiah prophecy in the New Testament, with the name spelled Emmanuel in Greek transliteration, but referring to the same Hebrew name Immanuel, meaning ‘God with us.”’
Immanuel, in Hebrew, means “God with us.” Jesus Christ is Immanuel as promised in Isaiah and fulfilled in Matthew and the Gospels. Jesus Christ is God with us.
J – Jesus Christ
Isaiah 9:6 (KJV) – “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”
1 Timothy 3:16 (KJV) – “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.”
Isaiah 9:6 and 1 Timothy 3:16 reveal the powerful truth that Jesus Christ is God manifest in the flesh. Isaiah declares the promised child to be “The mighty God” and “The everlasting Father,” showing that Jesus is not just a man, but fully divine. Paul confirms this mystery in 1 Timothy, stating that God was revealed in human form, seen, preached, believed on, and received into glory. Together, these verses proclaim that Jesus is the visible expression of the invisible God—our Counselor, Prince of Peace, and eternal Father.
K – King of Kings
1 Timothy 6:14-15 (KJV) – “(14) That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ: (15) Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;”
Revelation 17:14 (KJV) – “These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.”
The Lord Jesus Christ (the Lamb) is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and the Lord of lords!
On a side note, I looked up the meaning and definition of Potentate.
Potentate (noun)
- A person who possesses great power or dominion, especially a monarch or sovereign.
So when the Bible calls God the “only Potentate,” it is declaring that He alone holds supreme and ultimate power over all creation — King of kings and Lord of lords.
L – Lord of Lords
Psalm 136:3 (KJV) – “O give thanks to the Lord of lords: for his mercy endureth for ever.”
Most Scriptures that refer to God as the King of kings also describe Him as the Lord of lords. He is the King above every king and the Lord above every lord. Throughout history—and even today—many have called themselves kings and lords, but all must answer to the one true King and Lord, who reigns over all.
M – Miraculous / Marvellous
Job 7:8-9 (KJV) – “(8) I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause: (9) Which doeth great things and unsearchable; marvellous things without number:”
Jeremiah 32:27 (KJV) – “Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?”
Matthew 19:26 (KJV) – “But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.”
God is the God of the impossible! He is a miracle-working, wonder-working God. When situations seem impossible to fix, to change, or to heal—and when it’s too hard for us to even imagine a solution—God asks, “Is anything too hard for Me?” The answer is clear: “With God, all things are possible!”
N – Near
Psalm 145:18 (KJV) – “The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.”
James 4:8 (KJV) – “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.”
God is just a breath of prayer away. He’s always present, but it takes calling on Him—inviting Him—for Him to move in our situation. And sometimes, all it takes is one prayer, one whisper of the name of Jesus, one desperate plea, or one touch of the hem of His garment—and He responds. He loves us deeply and is always there, simply waiting for us to take that first step toward Him.
O – Omnipotent
Revelation 19:6 (KJV) – “And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.”
The word omnipotent means: “All-powerful; having unlimited power and authority.”
Biblical Usage: In reference to God, omnipotent means that He has the power to do anything that aligns with His nature and will. He is sovereign over creation, nature, life, death, and all circumstances.
P – Prince of Peace
John 14:27 (KJV) – “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
Philippians 4:7 (KJV) – “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
Isaiah 9:6 references the Prince of Peace, but there are many Scriptures that refer to the peace of God. It is a peace that surpasses all understanding—a peace that only God can give to those who trust in Him. It is a beautiful gift that brings comfort, hope, and serenity.
Q – Quieter of Storms
Psalm 107: 28-29 (KJV) “(28) Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses. (29) He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.”
Luke 8:24 (KJV) – “And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm.”
He is not only the One who quiets storms in the New Testament—He is also described that way in the Old Testament. All He has to do is say, “Peace, be still,” and the storms in your life—whether literal or figurative—will cease. He holds all power over everything in this world, including the raging storms and seas.
R – Redeemer
Isaiah 48:17 (KJV) – “Thus saith the LORD, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the LORD thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go.”
Titus 2:13-14 (KJV) – “(13) Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; (14) Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.”
Britannica Dictionary definition of REDEEMER:
[1] : a person who brings goodness, honor, etc., to something again: a person who redeems something
[2] : The Redeemer: Jesus Christ, “from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works (Titus 2:14).”
He loved us enough to give His life to redeem us from all our sins. He knew us even before we turned to Him—while we were still sinners—yet He still desired to bring us out of that life and redeem us. He gave His life for that very purpose.
S – Saviour
Isaiah 45:21 (KJV) – “Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the LORD? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me.”
Luke 2:10-11 (KJV) – “(10) And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. (11) For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.”
Our Savior, our Deliverer—the One who redeemed us, bought us with a price, and saved us by His mercy and grace—loves us more than we can ever comprehend. He shed His blood and gave His life so that we might be saved.
T – Truth
Deuteronomy 32:3-4 (KJV) – “(3) Because I will publish the name of the LORD: ascribe ye greatness unto our God. (4) He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.”
John 14:6 (KJV) – “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
He is not only a God of truth—He is the Truth. Everything about Him is true. His Word is true, His actions are true, and He cannot lie. Truth is at the very core of His nature. That’s why you can place your complete trust and confidence in Him—because He is Truth.
U – Unchanging
Malachi 3:6 (KJV) – “(6) For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.”
Hebrews 13:8 (KJV) – “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.”
He is unchanging, and His promises are true. He is the Rock—a firm foundation that cannot be shaken or altered. Throughout all time, He has remained the same, and He will forever be the unmovable, unchangeable God.
V – Victorious
Psalms 98:1 (KJV) – “O sing unto the LORD a new song; for he hath done marvellous things: his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory.”
Isaiah 25:8 (KJV) – “He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath spoken it.”
1 Corinthians 15:54-57 (KJV) – “(54) So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. (55) O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? (56) The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. (57) But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
God is not only victorious over our enemies and the Enemy—Satan—but He is also victorious over death, hell, and the grave! Isaiah 25:8 is a beautiful Scripture that promises the Mighty God will reach down and wipe away our tears. He will always triumph, always overcome, and always win—no matter what. God is victorious!
W – Wise
Daniel 2:20 (KJV) – “Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his:”
Jude 1:25 (KJV) – “To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.”
God holds all wisdom and power. He is wise and perfectly suited for every situation. He knows the answer to every problem before we even bring it to Him. He knows how to work out every circumstance for His glory and for our good.
X – eXalted
Isaiah 33:5 (KJV) – “The LORD is exalted; for he dwelleth on high: he hath filled Zion with judgment and righteousness.”
Isaiah 12:4 (KJV) – “And in that day shall ye say, Praise the LORD, call upon his name, declare his doings among the people, make mention that his name is exalted.”
Philippians 2:9-11 (KJV) – (9) Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: (10) That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; (11) And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
God is exalted on high; His Name is lifted up. He is Lord over all, the Most High God—above everything and everyone. He is high and lifted up.
Y – Yahweh
The name “Yahweh” is the personal, covenant name of God revealed in the Old Testament. In the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible, the name “Yahweh” is not transliterated directly; instead, it is most often rendered as “LORD” (in all capital letters). Whenever you see “LORD” in small caps in the KJV, it generally corresponds to YHWH (Yahweh) in the original Hebrew.
Exodus 3:14-15 (KJV) – (14) And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. (15) And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.
“LORD” here = Yahweh
Joel 2:32 (KJV) – “And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.”
Again, “LORD” here = Yahweh
Paul, referencing the above Scripture, stated: Romans 10:13 (KJV) – “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Philippians 2:11 (KJV) – “And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
Z – Zealous
Zeal (noun): Fervent devotion or enthusiasm for a cause, person, or pursuit. Intense eagerness and diligence, especially in pursuing spiritual or moral goals.
Zealous (adjective): Full of zeal; ardently active, devoted, or diligent. Passionately committed to a cause or belief, often with a sense of urgency.
Isaiah 9:6-7 (KJV) – (6) For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. (7) Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.
God is zealous for us! He is passionately committed to those who are wholeheartedly devoted to Him. He has promised us His kingdom, which He has zealously established and secured for us. His devotion is fierce and unwavering—far beyond what we can fully comprehend.
